What is an Avira?
Avira Operations GmbH & Co. KG is a German multinational computer security software company best known for its Avira Free Security antivirus software. Although founded in 2006, the Avira antivirus application has been under active development since 1986 by its predecessor company H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH.

Virus definition
Avira periodically “cleans out” its virus definition files, replacing specific signatures with generic ones for a general increase in performance and scanning speed. A 15 MB database clean-out was created on 27 October 2008, causing problems for users of the free version due to its large size and Avira’s slow free version servers. Avira responds by reducing the size of individual update files by providing less data with each update. Nowadays there are 32 small definition files that are updated regularly to avoid peaks in update downloads.
Advance heuristics
Avira products contain heuristics that proactively uncover unknown malware, before generating a special virus signature to combat malicious components and sending a Virus Guard update.
Heuristic virus detection involves extensive analysis and investigation of affected code for functions characteristic of malware. If scanned code exhibits these characteristics, it is reported as suspicious, although not necessarily malware; The user decides whether to act on the warning or ignore it.

Antivirus scanner
You can choose from two different scan options: Full Scan, Quick, and Smart Scan

Full Scan – This scan option will check your entire device and is the most reliable scanning option for catching malware threats. During our scan, it took about 35 minutes and caught 90% of malware threats, however, it was quite heavy on the device, consuming about 54% to 86% of the CPU.
Smart Scan – This is best for privacy or performance issues, malware, outdated apps, and network threats. Not as reliable as a full scan for finding malware.
There is also a section called Manage Scans. Here, you can keep track of the scans already performed on your device. Also, this tab allows you to schedule custom scans. Simply select the folders you want to check for malware and set the scan to be daily, weekly, or monthly.
Software updater
Software Updater is a paid feature of Avira Antivirus software.
It will scan your system for outdated apps and suggest updates. Note that it will notify you about risky programs even if you only use the Avira Free Security Suite. However, the free version of Avira’s software updater won’t upgrade older applications—you’ll need to purchase a premium package to get your updates done.
This feature is another reason to buy the paid version of Avira Antivirus. Keeping your programs up-to-date reduces the risk of infections and security breaches.
