You can change the frame ratio according to YouTube videos, Instagram reels, TikTok videos, or other custom sizes. Now that your initial footage is uploaded and you’re familiar with the interface, it’s time to trim your footage.

VN Setting Up

After opening the VN editor, you will find yourself in the home window. At the very top, right corner are a few buttons. If you tap the settings cog you can set some basic export parameters.

If you know you mostly want to export in 4K, you can set it here, so it will do that by default. You can also set the export frame rate and bitrate. So 4K and higher bitrates will give you the highest quality but take up more memory on your device.

If you toggle on Export Original, VN will export the same settings as the video you used when editing. If you’re editing a TikTok video, for example, that app can only display 1080p video so you might as well leave it at 1080p here.

About a third of the row of buttons is along the bottom of the screen. These are for importing various resources such as templates, filters for colors, music, sound FX, and fonts to add to your edit.

This large blank section will store your edits under different headings depending on where you decide to make your edits.

Below, there is another row of buttons. What we want to start a new project is the square button with a plus sign.

VN Starting a Project

Start a new project by tapping that plus button

We are taken to a new screen where we have to choose 1 of the following 3 options: New Project, Story, or Template.

New projects just launch the editor interface directly. The story prompts you to follow along, and then the lead editor assembles footage for you to work on. The template uses a fixed format so you don’t have to do much editing yourself.

If this is your first time with this software, just go with basic new projects.

VN Importing Video

Once you choose New Project you will be taken to a new screen which is basically your device’s photo and video gallery. There are 2 tabs at the top, Videos and Photos, and just tap on the one you want to select from

You can always add more videos later, so you can choose only 1 video here if you want Then add the other clips later.

Your selected videos will now appear below, with the duration of each clip inside a thumbnail. Click this big blue button with an arrow. Sometimes it will say processing, which means the video needs to be converted to VN to be editable.

Now you will find yourself in the main editing window of the VN.

VN Main Editing Screen Overview

Let’s take a quick look at the layout of the editing screen.

At the top center, we have a button that lets you set your frame ratio. The default is original, which is square. So okay for Instagram.

But you can choose standard 16:9 for any video in that regular aspect ratio. As for YouTube, eg. If it’s for TikTok or any vertical format like Facebook or Instagram stories, the button with the TikTok logo, which is 9:16.

If you want that cinematic widescreen aspect ratio, choose 21:9. You can even choose to export your video with a circular crop.

Well, I’m going to select Cinematic 21:9. The ratio will change in the preview window, which is below the frame ratio button.

At the bottom of the preview window, you can see this thin gray line with a break This represents all the clips in your timeline Breaks represent edit points between clips

Below this line on the left is a time counter. Left is the current playhead position. The total duration of all your clips together on the right.

2 blunt arrows shuttle the playhead along to the next edit point. So if you want to fast-forward to the beginning of a particular clip, it’s very easy to do so using these buttons.

Those buttons include the Play button. Tap to stop and start your video to preview your edits.

To the right of this row of controls are the Undo and Redo buttons. If you’ve made a mistake and want to recover, tap to the left. If you decide you want to proceed with these changes, tap the Redo button.

VN Splitting & Trimming

The first and most important thing to know is how to trim a clip. There are 2 ways.

The first way is to tap to select a clip which then opens a number of options If you drag the end of the clip, you change the length of the clip. Drag from the front to cut the beginning, and drag from the back to cut the end.

The second way to trim a clip is by using the scissors tool. Place the playhead line where you want to cut it and tap the Scissors button. Now your clip will be split at that point and one clip is now 2 clips.

Maybe you just want to keep one of those clips. So tap on the clip you want to get rid of and tap Delete In such apps, they don’t allow gaps in editing without a clip. Clips are automatically shuffled to fill the space you created by deleting a clip.

VN Trim Window

Actually, there is another option for trimming clips. You can see a Trim button next to the Split button. When you tap it, it will open a new trim window

The trim window is less cluttered so it’s easier to see what you’re doing. Again you can use these blunt arrows to skip between clips. Below the clip is a series of period choices.

This allows you to quickly select a time period. The original simply selects the entire clip.

As with the main editing window, you can drag the clip’s edges to resize it. The duration of the clip indicated in the center of the clip will change accordingly.

You’ll notice that as long as your window is open, the VN will continue to cycle around the selected clip. So once you get your desired length, you can now tap and slide the clip backward and forwards

As you slide your finger, the clip slides into position under the yellow box. So it’s a great way to get the right position in the video and get more precision in your editing.

When you’re done, tap Done.

VN Reordering clips

If you want to change the order of your clips, it’s very easy. Just select a clip and hold, all clips will now be resized to square thumbnails. Then drag and drop the clip to a new location.

VN Add Transitions

Adding transitions between clips is very easy in the VN editor. Just tap the box between the clips you want to add a transition to It’s a white box with a plus sign in the middle.

Now you will be taken to the conversion window. At the bottom of the preview window, there are 2 options for different types of transitions: Normal and Matte

You can swipe along to check all available conversions under each tab Matte transitions involve painting one clip over another using a preset mask animation.

You can select a transition and then adjust the length for the transition If you want to create a very slow crossfade from one shot to the next, select Dissolve and then use the slider to really slow it down.

Some transitions allow you to apply for all. This is if you want to quickly edit a bunch of clips and use the same transition every time.

VN Keyframes

Keyframes allow you to animate aspects of a clip. For example, you can create a Zoom

Drop a keyframe where you want to start zooming. Move to where you want the zoom to end and use 2 fingers in the preview window to expand the video A new keyframe is created.

VN-Video-Editor-Download-Free

Once you have 2 keyframes you can add a curve. It makes the animation change speed during the action, depending on the curve you choose.

For example, if you want the zoom to start slow, speed up and then slow down as it finishes. Curves make your animations look much less robotic and more professional.
